More things

More things I am grateful for

Saturday, Nov. 5, the internet. Once you lose something you discover just how much you rely on it. I spent the weekend without the internet. I got some reading done, got the dishes caught up, but I sure missed my internet friends.

Sunday, Nov. 6, I am grateful Lynette picked up Mufasa. We have had the care & keeping of this poor dog for the past 3 years. I wish I could be sure he is going to a better situation than what he has been in the past 3 years. Though he has had a dry place to live, it has been in a small, cramped kennel. Small & cramped for a full-grown Newfoundland. He has had food & water, but but not what he needed & craved: love, attention (grooming) & exercise. He's beautiful, but would be striking if he were properly cared for. He is about 6 years old now. We have spent a mortgage payment every year paying for his food & incidentals. Kents have fed him daily & had a cinderblock dog house built for him.

Monday, Nov. 7, I am grateful for Nick. As I stood up to go to lunch, my cell phone rang. It was Nick. He was ready to go to lunch. We went to Big J's & took soup & a sandwich home to Mother. He had obtained the needed equipment to connect the internet from Bill. Bill had bought it for $3 from the Deseret Industries & given it to him. Nick could probably have completed connecting the internet, but I wanted to get back to work so I wouldn't have to work late. The afternoon did not go well. Shortly before 8 p.m., I turned off the computer & stood up stiffly, ready to put on my coat. My cell phone beeped, telling me I had a new text message. I pulled my phone out of my pocket & there was a text message from Nick, "How goes work?" I love & appreciate him. He is always concerned about others.

Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010

The winter solstice occurred sometime today. It is only a moment in time, but the term also means the first day of winter. Today is the shortest day of the year, now the days will start getting longer again. We have had the Pineapple Express come through. I don't know whether I prefer the Pineapple Express or the Polar Express. I guess as long as it snows in the mountains, I'd prefer the Pineapple Express.

I told Rod, the editor at the Citizen, that Don had told me the weather pattern we are having, the warm weather & lots of rain, is called the Pineapple Express. Warm weather coming straight from Hawaii & bringing lots of rain & snow. Right now, we are at over 200% of average of precipitation. A year ago, we were in the 60th percentile. So, Rod did a little article on it. Front page news this week is the flooding in one of the Golf Course subdivisions. They had people out sandbagging. The Twin Lakes Canal Company took the canal out last summer & buried pipes to transport the water. Now there is no where for the water to drain.

I sure didn't pick a very good Christmas project - doing service for someone every day. I've been sick & very down because of the foreclosure & Mufasa.

Steve got into the kennel to fix the water buckets & the door didn't get secured tight enough & Mufasa got out. Not only did he get out, he knocked a woman down & bit her on the butt. She didn't press charges, but now Kim doesn't want him on her property anymore. I can't have him in town. Mufasa didn't run away, in fact he didn't leave the property. He just made himself at home on the porch.

Someone took a wolf hybrid up in the mountains last summer & turned him loose. I can't believe people would do that. He was caught killing sheep & so the sheepherder shot him. First of all, they thought he was a wolf, but then found he was a cross between a wolf & a German Shepherd.

I've got 3 more days to shop. I sure don't have the Christmas spirit this year.

Is it spring????????

Still reading The Book of Mormon daily. I've only missed one day out of 62. I am so proud of myself. I have to admit the website, Readthescriptures.com did not help. It was actually the little booklet I snagged at work, Read The Book of Mormon in 100 Days.

I was diligently keeping track of my reading on a spreadsheet saved on the network. Nick kept warning us that the hard drive was iffy & we'd better save our stuff. Of course, I kept thinking about it, but never did it. Now it's gone, sigh, along with several other spreadsheets.

I have been keeping up on ReadtheScriptures.com, cuz I like the quotes that are given. The quote for today was quite appropriate.
"If we are well prepared, death brings no terror. From an eternal perspective, death is premature only for those who are not prepared to meet God."
--Elder Russell M. Nelson, Ensign, May 2005, 18
My mother is terrified to die. I don't know why. You'd think she'd want to be with her husband, children & parents. I'll have to admit, I'm not ready to lose her.

On another note, Mufasa killed 2 chickens Sunday. We didn't find out until Sunday evening when we took dog food over. Kim wanted us to get the chickens out of the kennel. It was dark, so we couldn't see what the kennel looked like.

Nick & I were afraid to go over to clean up the kennel. We are used to cats & expected total carnage - blood, guts & feathers all over. We were pleasantly surprised to see this sight. I only took one picture because Mufasa was so excited to see us, he kept getting in the way.

The chickens flew into Mufasa's kennel Sunday morning. He played with them, chasing them & grabbing them & shaking them like a big rag doll. They'd squawk & he'd let them go, chase them & grab them again. Once their necks were broken & they were dead, he left them alone. They weren't fun anymore.

We couldn't get a rope around him & so I squeezed my way into the kennel. Once I was in there, Nick held the door shut so Mufasa couldn't get out. I put disposable gloves on so I could pick the chickens up & put them over the kennel wall into the garbage bag Steve was holding. The kennel is 6 feet tall. I am barely 5'2", so it was a reach, especially to hold my arm up high enough to get the chicken over the fence.

We had a plan. I would clean up the chickens & Nick would hold the dog. Steve came out to help us. It was a clean kill, so I didn't need to pick up feathers & guts. I had taken a scarf to put over my face so I wouldn't smell the chickens & gag cleaning them up. Mufasa didn't bother me. He kept trying to force his way out of the kennel. I'm so glad Nick was there to hold the door. Steve suggested feeding the dog so that I could get out without fighting him too.

I cut my arm squeezing into the kennel. It is a 2" cut on top of my right wrist. It bled quite a bit. I took the scarf I didn't need for my face & Nick tied it on quite tight. I almost said something about not needing a tourniquet, but didn't want to incense him. I did need the pressure to keep it from bleeding. I cleaned it up at Mother's. It seems quite superficial, so I did not go into the ER to have it stitched. Don-Mike came home & took over bandaging it. It hurts tonight. I am so glad it was my right arm & not the left. The left is the one I have lymphedema in & it could be quite serious if that arm were to become infected.

Happy Halloween

I think it's been over a year since I started blogging. It was a year ago today that Lynette brought Mufasa up to stay for a "little while." I'm thankful that Kents are taking care of him. I fell almost every day last winter going down to feed him. Shari's dad made him a nice cinderblock dog house. We all feel sorry that he can't get out & run, but ... he is uncontrollable & will run out into the highway.

On another note, even though I have cut down drastically on forwards, I find that I am still insufferable in inviting people to join causes & sending stuff on Facebook. "I just can't join everything you send." Well, I don't try to join everything everybody sends me, nor do I open every forward. I delete them or block them. I don't tell the person or people either, although there are a few times I have felt like saying something. President Peel told me as a missionary that I needed to have a gracious heart. And I have tried for many years to follow that advice. If asked directly, I will say something like, "I didn't open that." or "I blocked that." or "I didn't see that."
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of they friends or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
~ John Donne
Donne puts forth the idea that people are not isolated from one another. Nice thought & beautiful words. I certainly feel like an island. I feel like a pariah, isolated - always doing something wrong.

In one of Arlene Eakle's classes at the Family History Expo retreat that I got to attend this week, she talked about how some people only will associate with people of their own religion, family or neighborhood. She was talking about censuses. She said people are not alone. Ha!!!

"So, don't send me any forwards, don't send me anything you think I might be interested in because I'm not interested in anything except what I am interested in." is the message I feel I have been given.

Well, because I played hooky from work this week, I have to pay the piper & work tomorrow. I hope there's not a lot of work to do & that it doesn't take forever. I took Mother to the doctor on Friday, Oct. 16, & worked Saturday & Sunday. I worked SIX hours that Sunday, Oct. 18, until 10:30 p.m. So, I need to go to bed.

October's habit and other stuff

Flylady's habit for October is paper clutter. I did so good the first day. I spent the 15 minutes, but then the next 5 days were a total bust. Tomorrow is a day off, yippee!! Maybe I can do some catch up. I need to go over to Mother's & do some mending. A domestic engineer I'm not.

I love to read updates on others blogs, but usually by the time I've caught up on Facebook, Parenting Bipolar Kids & played my online games, it's time to go to bed, or past time & I've not checked email.

Today was my 2 week check up for my gall bladder surgery. I have 3 little incisions & then a slightly larger one in my belly button. It used to bulge, now it puckers. Dr. Broadbent told me that by the time I see him in 6 weeks for my cancer check up, my belly button will be a nice "inny." The puckers & swelling will be gone. He didn't staple me, he sutured me & my incisions are bright red with inflammation. They are not infected. There were a couple that were infected but I washed them with soap & water 2x a day & used Watkins "tit salve" (petro carbo salve) on them. Don told me it would probably be better if I used triple antibiotic salve. So, since I didn't have any, I bought some. The infection cleared up, but Dr. Broadbent said I must be allergic to the sutures he used. Same thing happened when I had the port-a-cath  implanted. I don't remember the incision being infected when I had the port removed.

Mother's blood just gets thicker by a point or two every time we go. Now, she's telling me she has lumps. She had me feel one & it didn't feel like a lump to me. She has a doctor's appt with Dr. Carlson next Thursday, which isn't any too soon for me. She also has a recheck on the INR level on Tuesday.

Mufasa has a spiffy new dog house over at Kents. It's made of cinder block & the door faces south. He won't stay in the kennel though, so they've had to chain him up. It's been so wet & rainy & Zach has the flu, so they haven't been able to fix it. We actually can't see how he gets out. Don thinks he jumps the fence.

He looks so good with his coat clipped. I asked that it be left about 2 inches so that he could grow out his winter coat before the snow flies. They quoted me 35$. I warned them that he is a big dog & was extremely unkempt, read matted. It took her 4 hours to clip him because he was so matted. When I went to pay, it was 70$!! I asked to see him. The receptionist told me that she had to lock the door because he had gotten out of the kennel & came wandering out into the reception area. I laughed & said that is why we call him Houdini. We got back to the kennel room, yes room, & he was in a large kennel. I don't know how he got out, but he had not only got out of the kennel, which was wire to the ceiling, but out the door.

Stuff I forgot to mention ...

Mick, Vicki's husband, will have to have a blood transfusion tomorrow, as well as his regular chemo treatment. Actor Patrick Swayze died today at the age of 57 from pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is what Mick is battling & what Grandma Porter died of.

I got Mufasa an appt to be groomed on Thursday, Sept. 24. The receptionist at the Animal Medical Clinic suggested Tuesday, Sept. 22, but I said no, I was having surgery on Monday, Sept. 21. They didn't have my name on file, but they did have Mufasa. I thought that was kind of funny. It sounded like the kennel has been upgraded from Kim's status on Facebook. I also gleaned that she is having all of her teeth removed tomorrow! Ack!!!

The kitten is finally settling down. They still can't let her out of the dog carrier though, she hides & then yowls. She won't eat wet cat food out of a tin, but loves dry cat food. Rhonda says she cries the whole time she's drinking. Jordan says if he wasn't watching her drink, he'd think she was drowning, LOL. She doesn't have a name yet.

The rest of the story ...

I heard a kitten meowing when I got out of the car behind the Citizen, Friday afternoon. It wasn't loud. I looked around & couldn't see it, so I went on into the building, clocked in & sat down at the computer.

A very short half hour later, Courtney came in with her baby Winnie, asking what was going on with the kitten in the engine. I went out with her & Richard's car had the hood up & a kitten was meowing pitifully. I couldn't see it, but Courtney could. She went into Rounds Insurance & asked about the kitten in Richard's engine. I don't remember Richard's last name. He said they'd got it out once. He came out with a broom & prodded it out from the engine. It ran down a couple of cars & climbed in someone else's car engine. Richard went back into Rounds & came out with the key. Courtney had left Winnie alone in the Citizen, so she went back in.

The kitten was prodded out of that engine & ran across the alley to the bank of cars parked along the curb. We got it out of that car by making noises. It ran down a few more cars. It went into another car engine. I thought it was Courtney's car, so I called the Citizen & asked Nancy Dent to send Courtney out. It wasn't her car, but she handed me Winnie, got down on her hands & knees & fished the cat out. I took it & cuddled it. Richard took his broom back into his office & I went back in to work.

Two hours later, I'm still messing with the yowling kitten. Finally, I took it out into the "tunnel." It is a roof built over a narrow space between Rounds Insurance & the Citizen building with garage doors at either end. We use it as storage & call it the tunnel. I put a box over the box I had the kitten in. I decided since I'd messed with the kitten so long, I'd clock out & call it a day. I checked Courtney's time card to see when she had logged in & used that as the time I logged out.

No one was going to take the poor little kitten. Nancy Dent couldn't because she already has 4 house cats. I have 5 cats & they don't get along too well as it is. Rhonda decided she'd take it. Nancy Cale put an ad in the lost & found section of the Classifieds. But I don't think it was lost. I think it was abandoned.

When Rhonda's kids came from school they went out to the tunnel & the kitten had escaped from the boxes. They could hear it under a pallet with boxes stacked on it. Jordan, her son, took all the boxes off the pallet & had to lift the pallet to pick up the kitten.

After I took the kitten into the Citizen, I called Nick & asked him to bring a styrofoam bowl & a can of cat food. She spilled the water, hid in the corner of the bathroom where I had incarcerated her & screamed. Kelly came out of his office & told me he wasn't going to put up with that cat. That's when I took her to the tunnel. She didn't even touch the cat food.

I called Rhonda Saturday morning to see if she knew of anyone with sheep shears. She wasn't home, but Jordan said he'd have her call me. I asked about the kitten. He said when they got home, she jumped out of the car & climbed a tree. They got her down & she had eaten a little bit of food Saturday morning.

Kim's ex-husband, Gil Hokanson, Shari's dad, is here until Tuesday. He's building a cinder block bldg. for Mufasa. He dropped a cinder block on his foot & broke all the bones across the top of his foot. Gil said he'd shear him if we could find some sheep shears. He thinks that if we shear him so that he still has 2 inches of fur left, he'll have time to grow in his winter coat before the snow flies. He is so matted where he drools down the front of him, it is pathetic.

I called Loraine Selman, a cousin. They run sheep. She said it would be just as cheap to have him groomed, as it would be for me to drive to Tremonton, get the shears & take them back. She has a point there. I called a neighbor that has had sheep & she said to take Mufasa to the Animal Medical Clinic, they have a groomer & they are the most reasonable dog groomers in town. So, I'll call them tomorrow & see when I can get an appt.

I didn't get a picture of the cute little tortoise shell kitten & I don't have a picture of Mufasa & his matted chest. I will try to get a before & after picture of Mufasa.

Summer's winding down

Teachers in the Preston School District started back to school yesterday. Classes will start Wednesday. Franklin County High School classes start Monday, as does the West Side school district classes. That Famous Preston Night Rodeo is over for another year, the Franklin County Fair was a week earlier than usual.

This year they had a car show on the last day of the fair. Don-Mike entered Nan's Am in it. There were 85 cars, with the majority being from within the county. I wish they'd had a cruise in like they do in Logan, it would have been fun to see a car parade.

The Eastern Idaho State Fair is coming up. It is usually held over Labor Day Weekend. Eek! I just remembered that I have to work Thursday, Aug. 27, & I scheduled a Pampered Chef party that day. I'll have to call & reschedule. I've been dragging my feet on even getting started on the party.

Just read in the paper about giving your dog plenty of shade & water because they can die of heat stroke. So glad Shari & Kim have Mufasa at their place in the shade. I was sure worried though when we had the big wind storm. I was afraid the limbs would come crashing down on him. I also worried about their outside dog Boots being blown away.

Don-Mike has been working hard on his derby car. The demolition derby is Saturday, Aug. 22. I'm reluctantly planning to attend. I see no rhyme nor reason to a demolition derby. I bought him a mouth guard when a neighbor said to do it. She said so many of the guys don't & they get their teeth knocked out when they hit the steering wheel with their mouth.

Monday

Well, here it is Aug. 3 & the calendar still says July. Still have 4 pages to do tomorrow on this week's paper, but that's because I took an hour for lunch. I ran over to the DUP training seminar, stood in the doorway of the chapel long enough to hear Carolyn (Smart, president of the Franklin Company) talk about writing our own family history, got a peek at her father's diary on the table in the foyer & picked up a handout she had laying on the table. Knowing I had errands to run & they were going to have a musical program, I left. When I got back, they had broken out into departments & Beth Gunnell, from our camp, had picked up my secretarial packet. I tracked her down, in Carolyn's class. I wanted my packet sooner, not later, LOL. I'm going to hit the ground running this year in DUP.

After the meeting, Debra Baldwin came over to The Citizen. She wants to do a historical column each month in The Citizen. Rod was getting ready to turn her down, I could tell. My computer is just to the side of Rod's desk. His desk faces the door, my desk faces the wall. I turned around & said we already had the 3rd week of the month set aside for DUP & she could have it. They had told me that I could only have 350 words, but I didn't remind him of that. I suggested keeping it within 500 words. I asked Debra if she was outreach for the county, but she said she is outreach for the LoPine Camp & works for USU teaching Islamic history or something like that.

I'm excited that she did. It wasn't the best timing because Monday is a production day. But if she'd have waited & come in or call, he'd have turned her down out of hand. This area is so rich in history & it's being lost. He suggested pictures to go with it!! How cool is that?

As far as laundry goes, nothing happened on that front. I did get some errands run during my lunch hour. Yes, I took an hour. I don't know how long it has been since I did that. Picked up the rabies tag for Mufasa, paid McKenzie Law Office, got a sandwich at Subway & ran a couple of empty pill bottles over to Preston Drug to have refilled.

According to the computer clock, I have 1 minute before the witching hour.

July 2

No swishing & swiping today, but then I didn't even make my bed. I got up, used the bathroom, was drawn outside to talk to the boys & they had a project they needed 3 drivers for & had to be back so Don-Mike could be to work. I hurriedly got dressed, took my meds, grabbed my phone & we drove both of Kents cars over to their place.

They've been here for car repairs. I'm glad my guys are such good mechanics.

I got home, checked Facebook, ate a sandwich & went to work. It wasn't until Don called me at 4:30 that I remembered I had not made the bed.

Oh, well, tomorrow's another day, right? I did get the power bill paid & I did work so I can have tomorrow off. I fed the dog too, the poor thing. I guess I need to hire someone to come & clean out his kennel. I can't do it.

Don-Mike has the day off to attend the Cache Valley Cruise In. He's entering Nan's Am in it. Don also has the day off & Gigi is coming for the weekend.

Senior moments

I feel old, OLD!!! Today we got a wedding announcement at The Citizen for a couple who, although they are 20, I remember as children!!! I remember typing their Santa letters when they were in the 1st & 2nd grades.

I went to pick Mother up to take her to Logan for her protime (3.3). It took us a while to get out of town. Mother has fluid in her lungs & she needs the oxygen to help her breathe. She is always so short of breath. I put her portable oxygen in the car. I stopped to get her a drink at the Conoco & as we turned out on to State Street she asked about the oxygen. I said I needed to go home anyway, so we'd just go home & I'd turn it on there. As we turned off the highway onto our street I noticed Lady, our next door neighbor's black lab, crossing the railroad tracks heading to the highway. I said to Mother, "Is that Lady?" Mother said, "No, she's not skinny enough." Well, it looked like Lady to me. I stopped the car, opened the door & yelled her name. She didn't stop, nor did she slow down crossing the highway & cars were coming.

I got home & called the neighbor. The phone rang & rang. When he finally answered I said his name & then said, "This is RaNae. Is Lady home?"

And he said, "Who?"

And I said, "Lady, your dog. Is she around?"

"Well, I think she is. I just saw her," he answered. Then said, "Who is this?"

I said, "RaNae, your neighbor. Just now when I crossed the railroad tracks she was crossing the highway going north, up by where *** Smith used to live."

He said he'd go get her. I went back to the garage & was telling Nick about an incident that happened a week ago. A few minutes later, here came the neighbor back, herding Lady in front of his pickup. I saw him out in the driveway as I was leaving & yelled out to him, "Where'd you find her?"

He said that he'd found her up across the big intersection just roaming around. He also said that she had just lost her freedom. He was going to have to chain her up. A week ago, Saturday, she came up missing & they retrieved her from the pound about a week ago today.

When I went down to feed Mufasa, I noticed Lady in her kennel as I came back up. I would much rather see a dog in a kennel than on a chain.

Anyway, when I got here, I had no clue why I was here. I racked my brain trying to remember why I "needed" to go home. Finally, I just conceded that the neighbor's late wife was telling me I needed to come home to save Lady. I don't know why else I would need to go home so desperately & then get here & not be able to remember why.

I have tried all afternoon to remember what I needed. I have lots of senior moments but can soon remember what I had forgotten.

Mother's Day 2009

I walked so much yesterday that this morning I woke up aching all over. My back & hips ached & my legs just felt heavy. My neck ached because I left my contoured pillow at the hotel. On my way to bed, in the dark, I might add, I found a pillow in a stack at the end of the bed. I promptly fell sideways, catching myself. My leg was aching from trying not to fall on the scanner in the front room. I scraped it on a magazine holder. So much for trying to be quiet.

My legs were feeling heavy because I had a cat laying on top of them. I had another cat using my tummy as a pillow & the third cat was not on me, but near me.

I walked down to the dog three times today. Once to feed him, he's out of food again, sigh. Then I got back to the house & realized I'd left my walking stick down there, so I turned around & walked back down to get it. The third time was to take a neighbor down to see him. Mufasa did not like the neighbor. He snapped at him.

I also walked down to the city park again from Mother's. I had my walking stick today. I need it to steady me. I really want to get one of those cool carved ones.

Dare I admit we broke the Sabbath by going out to eat? Mother said she thought I'd choose to go to Deer Cliff Inn, they opened yesterday. Don-Mike started taking us to Ogden to Chuck-A-Rama. He turned onto Airport Road in Logan & I asked where we were going. He said Ogden. I said no, Golden Corral. I said I might have said Chuck-A-Rama, but I meant Golden Corral in Logan.

I explained my reasoning for choosing Golden Corral. I didn't want to spend over $100 for a meal at Deer Cliff; I didn't want to go clear to Ogden. It had been a while since I'd been to Golden Corral & I like Golden Corral. The price has raised at GC, but it may have been for Mother's Day. They had carved turkey, ham, roast beef & steak. Don said the steak was better than the prime rib at the Borderline Grill in Franklin.

Nick took his car so he could leave when he wanted to & not wait for us. I wanted to go up to University Inn & see if I could retrieve my pillow. No luck. Darn it. I'll have to buy another one. It's a contoured one & is nice cuz I can sleep on my side with my CPAP on. I'll check at Cache Valley Oxygen because Mother gets a discount at CVO. They have pillows, just like what I had called CPAP pillows. The one I had was not called a CPAP pillow, but it's the same thing. It may just be cheaper to buy another one like I had that is not called a CPAP pillow.

Thursday, May 7

I worked this morning on the Farm & Ranch Edition. About 1 p.m., Don walked in. I looked up & almost the first thing I said was, "Do you still have a job?" Rod said his wife asks him that every night now since we had our hours cut. This is the 2nd day this week Don has had a "no-work."

Don & I had lunch together. That was nice. It doesn't happen often. I walked around Benson Park & down State Street. This time I just walked around the block, I didn't cut through any alleys or stores, Just stayed on the sidewalk. I did rest a couple of times today on the benches. I still had a stitch in my side when I got back to The Citizen.

I took the mail up to The Citizen & used one of the work tables in the old mail room to sort it. I took Mother & Don-Mikel's mail over to them & then worked for a while to sort through Mother's mail. I started at 3 & didn't finish until 7. I've still got mine & Don's mail to sort through. I gave Nick his mail & he gave me half of it back to shred. I also still have a ton of mail in the trunk of my car & I tried to get in Don-Mike's storage shed the other day & retrieve the mail that is sitting in boxes. I didn't have a key & it's been raining ever since.

I forgot to feed Mufasa until a quarter to 10 tonight. A full moon didn't help because it hid behind some storm clouds while I was out. Don-Mike & Nick came home from chasing sirens & Don-Mike turned the garage light out on me.

Rain, rain go away

We have had record-breaking precipitation this month. Rain almost every day since May 1. Tonight when I went down to feed Mufasa, it had started to rain again. I guess I shouldn't complain, but I am. Murmuring is the term. That's what Laman & Lemuel did in The Book of Mormon.

Lent, Day 40

The last day of Lent & tomorrow is Easter Sunday, Christ's resurrection. The time in the tomb is almost over. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I'd never really thought of the meaning of Lent. I think I'll have a deeper appreciation of Christ's sacrifice for us. Perhaps I should watch The Passion of the Christ every Easter season.

Last night was a very rough night for me. I put my CPAP mask on & the hole had ripped bigger, air was just rushing out. So, I thought I'd try Mother's old mask, but I hate that mask. It hurts. So, I had no choice but to pull out the full face mask I got. I fought with that all night. This morning when Don got up for work, yes, he had to work today, I got up to put the salve in Prissy's eye, then hauled out the CPAP bag & pulled out all the literature on the mask. I messed with it for about an hour, got it to fit & laid down & went right to sleep.

Tonight we went to the grocery store & I thought it was 11, closing time, but it was only 10. I'm so tired & have such a headache. I'm hoping tonight is better.

I have my phone calendar set to chime 4 times a day so Prissy gets the salve in her eye. Nick has been a great help & Prissy's eye is starting to look better.

Today Eddie was standing in the door & saw Chris Garrett's big mastiff bite Colton Hull. Colton was over on Gwen's lawn & I don't know if the dog was playing or what, but Colton kicked at him. Chris called the dog home & put him in the kennel. Colton was crying, so I went over to Hulls & rang the doorbell. When Cindy came to the door, I told her what Eddie had seen. The dog had bruised Colton's shoulder, but it hadn't broken the skin. Like Eddie said, the dog is bigger than the kid. Matt was supposed to be watching Colton, but usually when Matt is "watching" Colton, Colton is wandering the neighborhood. I guess Chris was watching his dog too, he was in the driveway & the dog was roaming the neighborhood.

Colton said it was Spillet's dog, the people that lived across the street. They've moved & taken their animals with them. They were there today, but their dogs weren't. When we left Hulls, Eddie said Chris & the Hulls, Matt & Cindy, were yelling. I guess that's one benefit of being hearing impaired, LOL, you can't hear your neighbors yelling at each other.

Tonight when I went to feed Mufasa, I told him that was why I don't let him out. I can't control him & I don't want him wandering the neighborhood.

Lent, Day 8

Thursdays are supposed to be my day. I had plans, big plans to pay bills, declutter & sew. Ummm, the best-laid plans of mice & men often go awry. Robert Burns sure had that right, even women's plans go awry, LOL.

I was sitting at the computer in my nightclothes this morning, working on Mother's bills when she called. She wanted the bath bench so she could take a bath. The home health aide was there, but Mother didn't think she could get down in the tub. I had not taken the bath bench over for a couple of reasons. One is that it was filthy, we've been using it for a shelf to put over the heat vent in the bathroom & we put the garbage can on top of it & a couple of other things, so I didn't want to lose that. Another thing is that the home health aides have been promising to bring in a bath bench & I thought it would be better than the one we have. It is metal & cold on your bum when you sit on it. It isn't wide enough for me. Mother's lost so much weight though, that I'm sure she had no trouble sitting between the handles. Mother bought it for Daddy & he was so tiny & frail, he had no trouble sitting between the handles.

I jumped & ran. I didn't even bother getting dressed. Then while I was still there, Arlene Wanner called. She couldn't remember Dr. Otrusinik's nurses name. He has 2, but I told her the names of the girls that were in the office yesterday. Arlene was coming out from having her protime taken, while we were waiting to have Mother's taken. She said she was bad, she'd write little notes on envelopes & then lose them. I told her I had a little book she could have. I'd come right home & take it over to her. Nick called on my cell phone while I was talking to Arlene on Mother's landline.

Nick was bored & wanted to go for a "little" ride. I told him I had promised Arlene I'd go over & I did. We programmed her cell phone so she can have one-touch dialing. Mother had told Arlene that I had programmed her cell phone so that she could just push one number & call people.

Anyway, Nick & I decided we'd see how far we could get up Logan Canyon. But first we had lunch at Big J's, paid the storage bill & then went to Logan & bought an adjustable bath stool for Mother. We got to the top of Logan Sinks & got stuck just off the road heading into the parking lot to the restrooms. The road had been slushy, but we still needed that restroom. He walked back into the restroom because we couldn't get into the parking lot. I didn't think I could make it that far. He backed onto the highway, flipped a U-ie & headed on out of there.

We stopped at Wal*Mart for the bathroom for me. I got a huge round pan for Mufasa from the pet dept. The dripper pan that Lynette had brought with him from Glendale is almost as flat as a pancake. The clerk asked me if I was going to bake a cake. Awfully big cake. I said no I was going to feed a dog. She said they just used a pie tin for their dog. I said that I'd been using a dripper pan, but the dog weighed almost 200 lb., & had stepped on it so many times, it wasn't holding food. I started getting a migraine in Wal*Mart, so I bought some ibuprofen as well.

Don met us after work & we went to Lynn's Audio & to Lowe's. I sat in the car, but Nick & Don went in. They bought a fluorescent light for over the stove, came home & Don changed the light & cleaned the cover. Nick used alcohol to take the dirt & grease off the fixture. OMG, I can see. I've been asking for a light for that fixture for months. Don-Mike turned it on & was so surprised. He said he was blinded by the light, LOL.

I had told Mother we'd go to Relief Society tonight if she felt like it. I called her to tell her I didn't feel like going, but she didn't answer the phone, either phone. So I got in the car & drove over to see if she was ok & to tell her I didn't feel like going. She was back getting ready to go. Even though she didn't feel like going, she had decided she'd go. I felt guilty that I didn't feel like going. I don't dare tell her I have a migraine. I told her when I had the last one. Arlene told me she is worried that I have another brain tumor. So, I just told her I thought I'd had too much sugar today. I probably have, but it was the migraine that did me in.

I got to bed at 1 again last night. I turned the computer off at 11:55. I woke up at 8:35 this morning & wrote myself a note, filled both sides of a 3x5 card of things I was going to do today. I had such grandiose plans & I lost the card. I wish I knew where I had put it.

Run, run as fast as you can

The Little Gingerbread Man Syndrome has reared it's head. I've had a busy few days working, caring for my mom & trying to keep up with Nick's current obsession, a 1977 Chevy Corvette.

Don-Mike told him tonight that if he expended HALF the energy on other projects as he has in trying to get this Corvette, nothing would hold him back. He may not have worded it like that, but my brain is on low battery & beeping at me.

Today, I had to be to work at 8:30 a.m., I worked til noon, ran to the grocery store & picked up some Campbell's tomato soup. It was cheaper to buy the small cans than the big cans. The small cans were on sale. I bought 7 cans & some milk. I came home, opened the soup & prepared it in my crockpot, then spent 15-20 minutes looking for the lid, murmuring & muttering the whole time. Never did find the lid, grrrrrrrr. Did I mention that DUP starts at 1? I grabbed a metal Dutch oven lid for the crockpot. Meanwhile I spilled Nick's cold cereal. It was sitting on the table with the plastic inner lining not folded down & the flaps open & it all ended up spilled. Next, I knocked the Cinnamon Toast Crunch off. The flaps were at least folded down on that & I didn't lose any of the cereal. Did I mention that DUP starts at 1? The Reece's cereal is still sitting out there not picked up, grrrr. I forgot about it.

While I was looking for the glass crockpot lid, I called & ordered bread sticks, ran the soup over to Jeanne Cutler's for DUP, & then over to Mother's to pick her up. She decided she wasn't going to DUP. Back to Pizza Villa to pick up the breadsticks. Over to Jeanne's & the soup was still COLD!!! What do you expect in 20 minutes? I expected hot soup.

We put it in a large bowl & stuck it in the microwave. Jeanne had a nice big glass lid to fit on a nice big Corning ware bowl. I told Jeanne as we were working on the soup that I'm almost 60 years old & I'll always be a flibbertigibbet. She told me I need to stop trying to do too many things at once. I laughed. If I haven't learned how to manage my time by now, I never will.

DUP got over at 3, Mother had a doctor's appt. in Logan at 4. Off to the doctor's appt., but first I plugged in the crock pot at Mother's because there was enough soup left over from DUP for us to have for supper. When I plugged in the crock pot, I discovered Jeanne's nice big glass measuring pitcher was still in the crock pot. And then I remembered I'd left the flag at Jeanne's. We made it to the clinic in time.

Home from the doctor's, I dished some soup up for Mother. We had eaten the leftover breadsticks from DUP on our way back from Logan. Good thing we didn't have to be home by a certain time. There was a 5 car pile up by the Hyde Park Maverik light. Traffic was backed up for miles. Reminded me of rush hour in the Salt Lake metro area.

By now, my phone was on "low battery" again. Second day in a row that's happened. Shows how much the phone has been used the last 2 days. I called Don on Mother's landline & asked him to call Pizza Villa & order more breadsticks.

I picked up the breadsticks on my way home, Don-Mike & Nick brought the food in from the car. Mufasa hadn't been fed & so I needed to feed him. With all the fresh, new snow we'd had an avalanche off of the old garage. It, of course, landed right on the back step & the snow hadn't been shoveled. Someone, probably Don, had just walked through it. My legs are short & I can't take the big steps & I fell down, kerplunk. My butt is still wet. It must have taken 5 minutes to get up. Off to the dog kennel. I had taken so long, Don came to find me. He saw me coming, turned around & walked back into the garage. I asked him to wait & help me through the avalanche. By the time I was back to the house, I was sobbing with exhaustion. Nick told me I needed to go to bed. Bed? At 8 p.m.?

So, now it is almost 3 a.m., & I have another full day tomorrow. What was Jeanne's advice? Stop trying to do too many things at once? The Little Gingerbread Man Syndrome is alive & well, until my body crashes from exhaustion again.

Rockets red glare

Francis Scott Key penned the national anthem in the "rockets red glare," as the battle raged around him. I am typing this as Don-Mike & Nick are yelling at each other. The battle is truly raging around me. I'm glad Mother is not here. This truly upsets her. I have my hearing aid turned off. I can still hear the raging. I am grateful I am deaf in one ear. It's times like this I wish I were deafer than I am.

Nick's zodiac sign is Taurus, the sign of the bull. He is bull-headed & right now he is a raging bull, LOL. Trying for lightheartedness. Don-Mike is Cancer, the twins or as the website I'm giving you the link for says, the crab. There is definitely 2 sides to this young man.

I took Mother to Instacare today after DUP. It was really funny. The medical assistant that took us back to the triage room looked SO familiar. I kept staring. I apologized & said that she looked so much like my cousin's daughter. She laughed & said, "That's because I am." It was Krystal, Jenni's oldest daughter, Luana's granddaughter. After Krystal left the room, Mother bemoaned the fact that she can't see. She asked me who she looked like, I said she looked just like her mother, even down to the dimples in her cheeks. Except she has dark brown hair & her mother is blonde.

They were all so nice there. The doctor was this cute little girl. I know, if she's a doctor, she's not a little girl. But such a sweetheart & petite. I said to Mother, I'd certainly go to her if she had her own practice.

Mother has been concerned that the lump on her thigh is a blood clot. Her leg is bruised all the way around her thigh & down into her calf today. The big lump is still there. So, I asked the doctor. She said no, it was a surface lump & where Mother is on coumadin, it wasn't likely to be a blood clot. I said that Mother's INR level has gotten so low that sometimes she's had TIA's, little strokes. They took Mother's protime & did some blood work. Her INR was high, 3.8; her hemoglobin was low because of all the blood she lost. They were concerned because Mother's protime was so high. I said it wasn't that high. Therapeutic level for Mother is between 2.5 & 3.5.

The doctor told me I should've taken her to the ER & had her leg stitched. I told her that I didn't take her to the ER because Mother doesn't like the doctor's up here. Her skin is so fragile that stitches won't stay in. I guess they could have used butterfly bandages, but I didn't think they'd believe me.

Anyway, they took x-rays of her chest. First time I had seen a chest x-ray of Mother. You could certainly see the wires they'd wired her chest shut with after the open heart surgery & the pacemaker & it's wires.

Instacare is in the same building as Dr. Carlson, Mother's primary care doctor. The Instacare doctor walked across the foyer & talked to Dr. C about her protime level & hemoglobin. He said that her cardiologist follows her protime. Dr. Larkin, I-care doc, said to have the INR rechecked Monday. We'll have it done Tuesday because that is the day that Mother has the CPAP followup with Dr. C. We have her INR checked before we go to Dr. C.

Nick's been on one all day & Don didn't make things any better when he authorized Don-Mike to be on the Verizon account & not Nick. grrrrrrrr.

I woke up late & prolly wouldn't have woke up when I did, if Nick had not awakened me. He asked me what time I needed to be to work. I said I needed to be there at 9. He said that it was 9. I jumped up, grabbed my clothes & was almost dressed when the editor of the newspaper called to see where I was. I told him as soon as I put my pants on & took my meds I'd be there. Then my supervisor wanted to know what my problem was. She's already warned me that it doesn't matter how long I've been there, I can be replaced, sigh. Well, I have news for her, when they replace me, they'll have to pay the new person more than I'm making! The last 2 people, that I know of, make more an hour than I do. The next time the government raises minimum wage, I'll finally get a raise. I mentioned that to the business manager & she said, "We'll see." I said, "No! I'll see. The next raise will make minimum wage more than I make an hour." She said, "Oh."

Then Don was huffy when I mentioned that the dog hadn't been fed. I told him that I had not done my weekly hard drive back up at work because I would have been later than I was picking Mother up for DUP. We go to lunch on DUP day, because the new DUP captain has ruled that there will be no lunches at meetings, only refreshments. And, of course, refreshments always means sugar. So, next month, when it's our turn, mine & Mother's, to have DUP at Mother's house, we will serve tomato soup in mugs & little triangle grilled cheese sandwiches, LOL.

Tuesday is not a day that Mother gets a home-delivered meal. And, like this morning, I'm usually running late & don't have anything to eat in the morning.

Right after DUP I'd taken Mother to Instacare, came home & taken long enough to heat Mother's supper up. I stopped at the grocery store & came home. Don got his outdoor stuff on & I told him to wait, I'd walk down with him. We walked out of the garage & I couldn't see because it was so dark. I mentioned a flashlight & he said he was ok. I said I wasn't. He huffily told me to go back & get a flashlight. I told him I'd be glad to when I dug myself out of the snowbank I'd fallen into.

Then, Nick decided he didn't like the soup I'd made tonight. I gave him 3 options that he could fix himself. Don-Mike told him there was garlic bread. I'd cut generous hunks of garlic bread - 2 soft inner pieces - which is what Don-Mike & Nick like.

So, I'd been running all day. I was grateful Don watered & fed the dog. He's done that for me the last 2 days. Tomorrow, I'll make a conscious effort to feed Mufasa earlier in the day, before the vet visit. Tomorrow is a vet appt for Prissy. If I had another cat carrier, I'd be able to take Sammy with & save an office visit. He has been in a fight & has a bad eye. I'll try for Friday afternoon for Sam.

What a weekend

I probably should be sharing this over on Mother's Caring Bridge site. Perhaps I'll copy some of it over later.

Don-Mike took the initiative & got his old cell phone turned on so that he has a phone until his new one comes on Monday or Tuesday. I had thought we were going to take his new old phone, or Nick's new old phone & give it to Mother. Nick, however, has found this really cool way of using your cell phone through your landline. It costs $150 just to get the equipment to do it. They, Nick & Don-Mike, want to get that set up before they add a line for Mother. I haven't had the energy to fight for just the cell phone yet, but may have to, as Lyola (Mother's lifelong friend) called yesterday & today. Lyola got a cell phone for Christmas. A Verizon cell phone, no less.

Now, to explain the "new old" phone. About March, Nick had a meltdown & broke his phone. Just snapped it in two. He went online & found some parts on E-bay & fixed it. He got his phone working again. Then something else went wrong, equipment failure. He took it down to the Verizon store in Logan & they gave him a brand new phone. So, he had this fairly new phone, he'd only used it a few months. But with Verizon you can update your phone every 2 years. In September he was eligible for an update. He wanted a Chocolate 3. He got the Chocolate 3. He gave the replacement Razor (new old phone) to Don-Mike because Don-Mike's phone was broken. Something had hit his pocket & smashed the window on his Razor. He wouldn't use Nick's phone. He wanted his own phone. So, for Christmas Don & Don-Mike got new phones. Actually, only Don got the new phone for Christmas.

Yesterday I decided I had to bite the bullet & clean Mufasa's kennel. The snow had piled up on the kennel & we've had a few warm days. One day it was up to 45° & the snow melted & dripped through. Mufasa was up to his ankles in mud & crud. I hadn't cleaned his kennel out in several weeks. So, I asked Kim if I could have Eddie come & help me. Well, he was a big help in getting the dog in & out of the kennel, but not much help in the actual cleaning. Don-Mike told me not to be like my mother & overdo. I told him that I had had an excellent example of how to overdo in watching both of my parents & their siblings.

Eddie tied Mufasa up to a fence pole & went back to the house. It took me 3 and half hours & I did get Eddie down to help shovel some of the soiled straw, but it smelled foul. Eddie had his t-shirt pulled up over his nose so he wouldn't throw up. By then I was so stuffed up I couldn't smell. I sent him back to the house. I brought Mufasa's pans up & cleaned them up & sat & rested for a little while. I was almost finished when Mother called to tell me she'd fallen & her face & leg was bleeding. She needed some help. I hurried & finished what I was doing. It was almost dark & thankfully Don was home.

It's January & Don has to work every day in January. Love the overtime, but sure do miss him on weekends. He gets very tired working every day.

I told Don & Eddie all they had to do was put the dog back in the kennel & make sure the door was secured so he wouldn't get out. I wasn't going to help because Mother had fallen & wanted some help.

Nick ran over to Mother's & I was not far behind him. She had fallen face first over a little flower stand. Quite a sturdy little stand that my father had made for Vera Smith many years ago. When Vera died, Reed brought the stand over & gave it to Mother. Her face had quit bleeding, but her shin took a long while to stop bleeding. She applied pressure & was using paper towels. She kept removing the paper towels & had a heap of bloody paper towels around her feet. By the time we got there, she had staunched the bleeding. Nick wanted to know if we should take her to the ER. I vetoed it, but tonight I'm not so sure. She told me where to get some band-aids. I told her that her skin is so fragile, that if we used a band-aid, it would tear her skin right off. She had some of the stretchy gauze that sticks to itself. Dr. Baker had given us some when she had the Mohs surgery on her arm. I used that & Nick went to the grocery store & bought some more.

Nick came home last night telling Don that it looked like Nana had been beat up. She looks worse today.

Tonight she has a big hard lump on her inner thigh & a huge bruise. She's afraid it's a blood clot. It probably is. Her shin was still bleeding tonight when I changed the bandage. It looked like it had just started bleeding again. Talk about wanting to throw up. My stomach is quite queasy when it comes to blood & gore. I swear that her shin is scraped to the bone. I tell you though, there is no yellow fat on that little skinny leg of hers.

Last night I stayed with Mother a couple of hours. I heated up some soup Luana had brought over & sat & had supper with her. I checked her shin before I came home. It had stopped bleeding.

My arm that has lymphedema in it was aching clear up into my shoulder last night. Today I feel like I've been beat up. My legs & back hurt & my arm still hurts, but I don't look like I've been beat up, LOL.

Sucker punched

I feel like I've been sucker punched. You know, things are going along pretty good & you think you understand what is happening. Suddenly, everything has gone South in a hand basket. I remember feeling like that in Nick's IEP meetings, especially in junior high. Will I ever understand this damned disease?? Will I ever be able to differentiate between what is Asperger's & what is bipolar??

I'm always off balance, whether it be walking or emotional. Today, while Nick was at Computer Wise, I sat in the car. I noticed that Kurt (Wood, the owner of Computer Wise) had rented the next suite to a psychiatrist. I actually thought of going in there & checking on whether or not they take insurance. I know the new psy doc at the Budge Clinic doesn't. The receptionist was quite rude there & I didn't want the same experience today. I'll check on it another day.

Speaking of being off balance, I've started using a flag pole to walk down to Mufasa. I didn't fall the last 2 days. I flailed around, but didn't go down. I fell 2x the day before, Monday.

Today was 45 degrees & it is currently 44°, so the snow is melting. Mufasa is in a sea of mud. I need to get Eddie over here to help me with him.

Don-Mike just got a brand new phone on Christmas Day. Today, because it was so warm, the snow melted a lot. He was out at the end of the driveway on North State, trying to find the drain, so he could drain the water that had built up at the end of the driveway. I talked to him & told him not to drop his phone in the water. I could just see that happening. Well, he dropped his phone in the water. It, of course, is not working.

I called him to see if he was joining us for supper so that I'd know how much to fix. He didn't answer the phone. So, I called again, thinking perhaps he'd left it in the Mustang. Again, no answer, so that time I left a message. Supper was ready & Nick asked if I'd called Don-Mike. I said yes. So, he tried Don-Mike's phone. No answer. So, he called Mother's landline. And that's when we found out Don-Mike's sad story.

When I upgraded his & Don's phones, I put insurance on Don-Mike's phone. Don-Mike's last 2 phones have been broken. I reminded Nick to tell Don-Mike that his phone was insured. As soon as Nick was off the phone, he asked if his phone could be insured too. It would probably be a good idea.

Now, Mother wants a cell phone so she can call her friend Lyola in New Hampshire & her friend Melba in Ogden, sigh. My phone bill this month was $583.72. There was a balance of $130 past due. We are supposed to get 2 $50 rebates for the 2 new phones, 1 of which is now dead. But that still leaves me with a balance of $353.72.

The good news is Don is working 4 days of overtime this month, the bad news is that the extra money will most likely go to the phone bill.
