Saturday, May 16 - Did I walk 15 minutes today? No, I moved 15 minutes today. The birds pooped all over the car & it looks terrible. I don't see why they have to poop on my car just because I park under the trees. When I went to take Mother to her hair appt, she commented on the bird poop on the passenger side window. I decided if Mother could SEE the bird poop, I needed to do more than wash the windows.
I went over to the car wash & washed the car. It was satisfying to see the dirt wash off the car. I spent 10 minutes in the car wash with the foaming brush, then washing it with the high power soap, then rinsing it. I swung the hose around & it hit me in the head. All of a sudden, I couldn't hear. I was afraid I'd knocked my hearing aid off onto the wet floor. No, it was still in my ear. I got the hose put back in the little tubie holder thingie, ok, I know that is redundant, & pulled my hearing aid out. No damage, the battery casing had been knocked open. I snapped that shut & put it back in. Only damage, an extreme headache. Oh, & I didn't have enough quarters to do the wax. Maybe next time.
I ran another couple of errands and had another extreme scare. This time I parked in front of Lewiston State Bank & noticed a mother with 4 children parked in front of me, trying to get her groceries in & keep the kids from running away from her. The little boy, about 3 or 4, took off to the cart racks another aisle over. The mother was torn, I could see it. She couldn't leave the baby in the shopping cart & go for the little boy. So she stood there yelling at him to come back. I had decided I was going after the little guy when he decided to run back, right in front of a speeding car. The woman barely missed him. I stood there screaming "NOOOOOO!" It made me physically ill. I had to stand against the railing at the bank door for several seconds gaining my composure & it wasn't even my kid!!! Or even someone I knew. Mother said I should have gone & stood with the baby & the older children & let the mother go after him. Because, I told her, I didn't think of it. He made it safe. Why do people drive in a parking lot like it is a freeway??
I picked Mother up from her hair appt. & we went to Franklin to get eggs. Instead of going directly to the egg farm, I decided I'd drive up Maple Creek. At the sibling party they had been talking about the road from Maple Creek over to the ranch where they grew up. The road has been closed & you can't go through there any more. I got past that road & was still driving up the road. By then, it was unimproved and was just a dirt track. All of a sudden the earth dropped out from under us. My 44 oz. plastic refill cup jumped out of the cup holder & landed upside down against me. I slammed on the brakes, trying to right the cup & Mother's wondering what happened. I decided it was a hole in the road. We got past that & there was another huge hole, this one filled with water. I couldn't help but see it. I said we'd better turn around. Mother asked how, the road was so narrow. I said I'd back down the hill. Trying to get past the first hole, I practically backed up the steep embankment. I couldn't go around it the other way because it was a steep slope with a fence, grrr.
I had confided to Mother earlier that I needed to pee & was hoping I could find a place to do it. However, there are so many new houses up there, no place presented itself as private, except where we were. Mother told me to get out there, open both doors & squat between the open doors. I opened the door & there was fresh, oozy mud. No way. We made it down the hill, turned around in someone's driveway & went back to the egg farm. I'm so glad we didn't have 6 dozen eggs in the back of the car when we hit the pot hole. Speaking of eggs, I need to put them away.
Mother was also afraid that we'd ruptured the oil pan like we did on a similar trip before my mission in 1973. That time, we hit a rock. As I backed down the hill, I'd stop & look in front of me to see if I could see a trail of oil. I thought perhaps we'd broken a tie rod or something. We also wondered about the alignment, the car drives fine.
